File & Data Workbench
Clean, compare and analyse CSV and Excel files, without uploading them
The File & Data Workbench opens CSV, TSV and Excel files right in your browser. It explains what's wrong with a file, lets you clean it step by step with a preview of every change, compares two versions, and scores data quality, all without sending your data anywhere.
No sign-up. Nothing is uploaded.
What's included
Import & Preview
Drop in a CSV or Excel file, check its structure, detect column types and spot problems.
Clean
Remove duplicates, trim spaces, fix case, find and replace, handle empty values and edit columns, with a preview and undo for every step.
Compare
Match two files by key columns and see exactly what was added, removed or changed.
Analyse
Column profiles, data-quality score and charts built from your actual data.
How it works
Step 1
Import
Drop in a CSV, TSV or TXT file (up to 100 MB) or an Excel .xlsx/.xlsm workbook (up to 25 MB). The delimiter and encoding are detected, and problems like short rows or unclosed quotes are explained in plain language.
Step 2
Clean
Remove duplicate rows on all or chosen columns, trim spaces, change case, find and replace, fill or remove empty values, and rename, remove or reorder columns. Each step shows exactly which rows and values will change, and can be undone.
Step 3
Compare and analyse
Match two versions of a file by an ID or email to see added, removed and changed rows, and check a data-quality score that shows how it is calculated.
Step 4
Export
Download a clean CSV with your choice of delimiter and line endings, with protection against spreadsheet formula injection switched on by default.
What people use it for
Tidy a CRM or email-list export
Remove duplicate contacts, stray spaces and inconsistent capitalisation before an import.
See what changed between two exports
Compare this month's and last month's product, order or subscriber file by key.
Check a client's spreadsheet before you use it
Find empty values, duplicates and mixed column types in seconds.
Clean analytics exports
Prepare a CSV you downloaded from your channel or store analytics before charting it.
Good to know
- Export is CSV only for now.
- Excel files are read one sheet at a time; .xls, .ods and Numbers files must be saved as .xlsx or CSV first.
- Nothing is saved between visits: export your result before closing the tab.
- Very large files depend on your device's memory.
Questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and processed in your browser. The site's security policy also blocks the page from sending data to other servers.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It's free and there is no sign-up or account.
How do I remove duplicates from a CSV file?
Import the file, open Clean, choose Remove duplicates, pick whether rows must match on all columns or chosen key columns, check the preview of rows to be removed, then apply. You can undo it at any time.
Can I compare two CSV or Excel files?
Yes. Compare matches rows by key columns (such as an ID or email) or by identical rows and shows what was added, removed or changed. The differences can be exported as CSV.
Does it change my original file?
Never. Cleaning steps are kept separately; your original stays as it was and you download a new file.
